Precautions

  • Check packaging carefully before using. Do not use if package is damaged or opened.
  • Do not re-sterilize.
  • Use in one patient.
  • Observe the label change, and replace it properly.
  • Check the integrity of the sleeve. Discard if found defective.
  • Follow the proper guidelines for suction. Most of sucking should not last more than 10-15 seconds and the actual duration of the negative pressure should be no more than 5-8 seconds.
  • Use the appropriate level of vacuum control. Some hospital policies suggest 100 to 120 mmHg.

Bronchial secretions is a defense system that generates bronchial mucosa to trap particles and expel through coughing. In patients undergoing mechanical ventilation through endotracheal tubes, this mechanism to expel excess secretions are abolished and need to be removed manually by suction of the endotracheal tube that partially or completely occlude the airway and prevent proper ventilation is performed.
